Penile Curvature (Peyronie’s Disease) Treatment

If you suffer from painful erections due to a severe curvature in your penis, we invite you to contact our clinic for a free consultation to discuss your Peyronie’s Disease treatment options.

Peyronie’s Disease is a condition some men have that has caused their penis to develop fibrous scar tissue, resulting in curved, painful erections. While some curves are normal, painful curves are not.

While symptoms vary from patient to patient, some of the most common symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease include:

  • obvious lumps or hard tissue under the skin;
  • visible bend in the penis;
  • spots on the penis that seem to be indented or narrow;
  • erectile dysfunction;
  • penis shortening;
  • penile pain with or without an erection.

While for some men Peyronie’s Disease heals on its own, it may persist in other men and can even get worse over time.

In about 15 percent of cases, Peyronie’s disease spontaneously resolves itself without treatment. However, more than 40 percent of cases may worsen. If treatment is necessary, oral medications, injections, and surgery may be used. Therapy for the condition aims to relieve symptoms and preserve erectile function.

Medications

Further are the drugs, injections, and other treatment methods that are usually used to treat Peyronie’s Disease:

  1. Para-aminobenzoate or vitamin E tablets may be recommended for several months.
  2. Colchicine and pentoxifylline are new methods that have significant success.
  3. The injection of verapamil into the plaque in the penis may be also recommended. This treatment typically requires about six to 12 injections over six months duration.
  4. Iontophoresis. This is a technique in which a painless current of electricity is used to deliver verapamil or some other agent under the skin into the plaque.
  5. NSAIDS such as ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve) for pain.
  6. Pentoxifylline, a combination of vitamin E and colchicine, or carnitine to reduce scarring. These are oral medicines (pills).
  7. Collagenase, interferon, and verapamil to reduce scarring. These are given as shots into the scar tissue.

Surgery

Surgery is only recommended in severe cases for patients who fail to respond to non-surgical therapy and have curvature for longer than 12 months.

The two most common surgical methods are the cutting of the plaque followed by placement of a patch of the vein or artificial material, or stitching of tissue from the side of the penis opposite the plaque, which corrects the penile curvature.
